Community Gyms Coalition and IHRSA Call on President Biden to Include Gyms and Fitness Facilities in Latest Stimulus Package

WASHINGTON, D.C. — February 8, 2021 — The Community Gyms Coalition (CGC), and the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), groups representing the more than 40,000 gyms and fitness studios across the U.S., today released the following statement calling on Congress to include gyms and fitness facilities in the latest stimulus package.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have heard the same trio of industries mandated to close across the country: “restaurants, bars and gyms”. While we’re happy to see the food service industry receive assistance, it’s unthinkable that we’re not also offered relief after suffering a closure rate that’s nearly five times that of the restaurant industry. President Biden called for critical support for the hardest-hit industries, and no one can deny that gyms and fitness studios should be right there with restaurants. The GYMS Act would help our roughly 40,000 facilities continue to improve the health of our communities and employ 3.2 million Americans, whose jobs are now in peril. The survival of America’s small gyms and fitness studios is at risk, and Congress needs to pass the GYMS Act to save these small businesses and millions of jobs they support.”
