WASHINGTON, D.C. — March 31, 2021 — The Community Gyms Coalition (CGC), a group representing more than 15,000 local fitness studios and small gyms in the U.S., announced today that Groupon has joined the coalition urging Congress to pass the GYMS Act and provide targeted relief to gyms and fitness studios.
“Small gyms and fitness studios are important neighborhood fixtures that help create vibrant, healthy communities,” said Brian Fields, Chief Commercial Officer at Groupon. “Groupon believes in the power of local businesses and we’re proud to stand with the fitness industry in support of the Community Gyms Coalition. We urge Congress to take immediate action to help these businesses.”
A survey of small, independent gyms and fitness studios found that existing federal relief programs, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL), have failed to help 63 percent of gym owners. Currently, the bipartisan GYMS Act has 75 co-sponsors.
Other members of the Community Gyms Coalition include: Boutique Fitness Solutions, ClassPass, ClubReady, CrossFit, Jazzercise, Mindbody, Orangetheory Fitness, Retro Fitness, RowHouse, Self Esteem Brands, [solidcore], Xponential Fitness, Zumba Fitness, and 9Round.
